Pakistani filmmaker Shehzad Hameed Bags Two Awards at New York Festival
Good news is a rare commodity in these troubled times when the whole world is trying to fight off the global pandemic COVID-19. Thanks to Shehzad Hameed Ahmed, a Pakistani filmmaker, we have reason to cheer as he bags two awards at the New York Festival 2020.
Shehzad Hameed Ahmed is a Singapore based documentary filmmaker and also a broadcast journalist. Before this year, he has already won 4 different awards in the previous festivals. His total awards tally at the New York Festival now stands at 6, which in itself is a remarkable achievement.
His documentary ‘White Shade of Terror’ won him the silver medal in the Human Rights category this year. While he won a bronze medal for ‘Caught in the Crossfire’ in the Human Concerns category.
‘White Shade of Terror’ is a documentary film based on the Christchurch shootings in 2019. The main focus was to investigate and highlight the political support these white supremacist groups have and how they are persuading their followers to commit such atrocious crimes against humankind. For this, Shehzad traveled from the Christchurch mosque in New Zealand to meet white supremacists groups in Australia, Norway, and Georgia.
The highlight of this documentary comes when a white supremacist group leader in Georgia, explains their understanding of Muslims in America. And how the lax gun laws are aiding such attacks against the Muslims.
‘Caught in the Crossfire’ is the first part of a two-part documentary series. It features the stories of three civilians: a young army cadet, a journalist, and a female street artist that are stuck in the never-ending war between the Afghan government and the Taliban.
Shehzad traveled to the front line of the war in Afghanistan to complete his two-part documentary series. Part two of the documentary series is focused on the political and military aspects of the story.
Shehzad Hameed Ahmed is well known for his explorations of many dangerous parts in the world for his documentaries. The destination of his previous travels includes the Philippines’s war zone, Amazon rain forests in Brazil, Lashkar-e-Taiba in Pakistan, and Indonesia’s jungle warfare against ISIS in Poso.
