Wrong Number 2 – Ideal Entertainment For Dirty Minds!
If I could get a dollar every time a dirty joke went past my eyes, Wrong Number 2 could have made me a billionaire. While Chhalawa suffered from bad scripting, Yasir Nawaz’s latest was full of trashy jokes. It could have done better but instead wasted wonderful actors like Sami Khan, Neelam Muneer and even Yasir Nawaz.
Director Yasir Nawaz still tends to go overboard in films
For someone who does so well as an actor and director on TV, Yasir Nawaz continues to disappoint in films. His directorial venture Khudgharz was one of the best dramas of 2018, while he was on top of his game as an actor in Dil Mom Ka Diya. He has hit dramas to his credits and many current actors credit their success to his direction. Yet, he seems to go overboard in films, which is something he should learn before its too late.
The leading pair is the second lead in Wrong Number 2
It would be incorrect to say that Neelam Muneer didn’t look good in the film, in fact, she looked better than ever in any TV or film project. His onscreen partner Sami Khan made his return to commercial cinema after more than 15 years and impressed in his first outing. However, they both had less to do than Yasir Nawaz and Sana Fakhar who were, in fact, the leading pair of the film. The plot revolved around their children, his low-wage job and middle-class problems, etc. Sami Khan and Neelam Muneer came and went after a few scenes, and their fans felt cheated for that.
Toilet humor is king in Wrong Number 2
For someone who does usually clean comedy on TV, Ahmed Hassan could have gone ahead and eliminated dirtiness from the script. Sadly there were below the belt jokes every now and then, and some even made kids laugh in the cinema, simply because they had no idea what they meant. Be it Jawed Sheikh’s unnecessary mumbling, Mehmood Aslam’s repetitive speeches or Danish Nawaz’s Sexy Shaukat avatar, they could have been filtered for comedy’s sake. Ahmed’s own character Happy looked too fit to be a druggy but he did make people laugh, and some cringe, including this scribe.
Time to realize we have better composers than Simaab Sen
The film’s music composer Simaab Sen composes background scores in Bollywood films, not songs. He wasn’t very impressive in Mehrunisa V Lub U and Wrong No. 1 music composer Waqar Ali could have replaced him. Sadly, the songs in this film are as forgettable as they could be, despite being shot on excellent locations.
Wrong Number 2 will be a hit in the masses
Yasir Nawaz used poverty as a ‘superpower’ for his character Mehboob because he knows how to grab the audience’s attention. The scenes where he talks back to himself are done very well, and show his prowess as an actor. The sooner he realizes his own superpower, the better for Pakistani cinema.
Yes, as a director Yasir Nawaz wants to make people laugh but there can be another, more clean way. It’s time he realizes that there are no frontbenchers in cinemas and act as a responsible filmmaker. Here’s hoping for something better from the talented director in the future.
